Decorating is a passion of mine and I spent several years as a professional stager. I love sharing simple yet effective secrets to my clients on ways to make their home look its absolute best before we put the SALE sign in the ground
While every home is different, I have a few key suggestions that I think can apply to every home:
Paint.
I would suggest going with neutrals as the main colour (think: offwhite, grey, light champagne, etc).
These days, almost all paint brands will give you the coverage and look you’re going for but a few of my favourites are:
Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace
Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter
Sherwin Williams Spatial White
Quick Accents & Fixes
Consider updating your:
Curtains
Rugs
Couch pillows
Lamps / Lighting Fixtures
Personal photos with artwork
New towels and white linens
If you’re working with a dark space, sometimes adding a mirror in a strategic space can add the extra light you’re looking for. A fresh bouquet of flowers can also brighten up a room.
Ever notice on television home-remodeling shows the final product always features a beautifully-set table? This is no accident. By setting your dining room table with a new dinnerware set, place mats and napkins, potential homeowners will be able to imagine entertaining their friends and family there.
Staging doesn’t mean that you have to spend thousands. For example, sometimes a simple fix like using a furniture touch up marker can be an effective way to make your furniture present much better. You could also consider updating kitchen cabinet hardware or kitchen backplash. Yes, you can paint brick! Painting a brick fireplace white is one of my favourite things to do to freshen up a space.
Now here comes the “not so fun stuff”…..First, it’s time to declutter.
If you’re serious about selling, you should take some boxes and put all of your personal items in them. If you have a garage, clean it out! I would even rent a storage unit if you need to. Remove the majority of your jackets and footwear from the front entrance. If necessary, use baskets to hide things such as bathroom toiletries or your children’s toys.
Secondly, Spring is on its way so what better time to do a deep clean? Especially if you’re thinking about selling!
I’m talking about really getting into the nitty gritty:
Cleaning your kitchen cabinets and appliances
Wiping down the baseboard, shelving, and even your ceiling fans for dust!
Cleaning the bathrooms and the laundry area. Think you’ve cleaned them “good enough?” Go back and do it again for optimal results.
